Know-how and infrastructure of the research group
Hermann Schichl's expertise is in the area of global optimization and software development, in particular in the development of complete and rigorous algorithms based on branch-and-bound/reduce methods. He developed and maintains the COCONUT-Environment, a public domain software platform for global optimization algorithms, and of the state-of-the-art solvers cocos and coco_gop_ex (together with M. Cs. Markot) based on the API of the COCONUT Environment. The complete and rigorous algorithms developed are of particular importance in applications such as stability and design in robotics, fluid phase behaviour in chemical engineering, worst case studies in mechanical engineering, since they are the only methods which guarantee to not miss the global optimizer, avoiding disastrous consequences.
Collaborations within the VGSCO
A. Neumaier and I. Bomze on global optimization.
R. Bot on nonsmooth optimization.
