Research Interests

Approaching large scale transport optimization, network design and cutting and packing problems by combining exact and heuristic techniques, decomposition methods, efficient algorithms and data structures.

Know-how and infrastructure of the research group

A broad spectrum of exact and heuristic techniques for combinatorial optimization, including in particular mixed integer programming methods, (meta-)heuristics, hybrid optimization approaches and matheuristics belong to the core expertise of the Algorithms and Data Structures Group, which is headed by Prof. Günther Raidl. Applications in different fields including transportation optimization, network design, cutting and packing, scheduling and timetabling, and bioinformatics are frequently considered.

The group is part of the Institute of Computer Graphics and Algorithms, Faculty of Informatics at the TU Wien and currently consists of 1 PostDoc, 8 funded PhD candidates, a secretary, a technician, and Guenther Raidl. It is located at Favoritenstraße 9, 1040 Vienna, where most of the Informatic Faculty groups can be found. The rooms provide enough space to host up to three additional collegiates or visiting professors to conduct the project. All offices are well equipped with PCs. The university will not charge project overheads for this infrastructure and the employment of collegiates.

The group has its own cluster for high performance computing and shared supercomputing facilities are also available; in particular, the Vienna Scientific Cluster (VSC) can also be used within this project. Additionally, the University supports the DK wit €20.000 that can be used for further personnel costs, guest professors, and travelling.

Collegiates will have the opportunity to participate in teaching, either by assisting in some of the existing courses of the Algorithms and Data Structures group, or possibly by giving own courses on special topics in later years.

Collaborations within the VGSCO

With Monika Henzinger, Vladimir Kolmogorov and Nysret Musliu on Combinatorial Optimization and with Nysret Musliu and Arnold Neumaier on Heuristic Optimization.
